Machete is the cinematic joke that won’t die. Which might not be a bad thing. Writer-director Robert Rodriguez conceived the character on the set of Desperado nearly 20 years ago, gave him a trial run via a fake trailer in Grindhouse, and such was the character’s popularity that Rodriguez span him out into a feature, the somewhat logically titled Machete.
Leaving political correctness at the theatre door, the film was filled with sex and violence and possessed a wicked sense of humour. It was also a modest hit, and concluded with a comedy coda stating that the character would return in Machete Kills. And now he’s managed to make that very film, with Danny Trejo once again brandishing the titular knife to battle against crime, oppression and social injustice.
