Most superhero comic book fans would agree that the genre has really grown up over the past 15 years. On average, the audience is older and more savvy about seeking out good stories rather than buying 50 copies of whatever issue has the most chromium-plated shoulder pads on the cover. But for all the progress superhero comics have made in recent years, there are always reminders of how far we have yet to go. One of the hardest struggles we’ve been seeing is the industry’s sometimes awkward attempts to revamp how it presents female characters and how it targets female readers. There’s a large and growing female readership in comics, but you wouldn’t always know it from looking at the books themselves.
