Was I the only one who wanted Henry Cavill to smile more often in Man of Steel?
I wanted Amy Adams, who has proved she is hilarious in Enchanted and The Muppets, to crack a joke. I wanted Laurence Fishburne to take a leaf out of Lois and Clark’s Lane Smith in his Southern, Elvis-obsessed interpretation of Perry. I wanted a crooked smile. I yearned for a bit of self-awareness. I begged for good-natured cantankerousness.
But it was not to be. Instead, I got Russell Crowe floating around like a lost Shakespearean actor searching for his stage, and a tight-lipped Cavill carrying the weight of the world on his load-bearing shoulders, and Amy Adams sort of... running around. Very seriously.
