Wonder Kid and Google
9/15/2016
Some eleven plus years ago when we were newbie boaters we went to the same spot then the same two spots boating almost every weekend. It's understandable because with a young family you want to feel comfortable and familiar with your surroundings but I feel if your going to embrace this hobby, although I prefer boating lifestyle, you've got to expand your boating horizons.
I think the biggest hurdle is knowing where your going and I don't just mean the route to your destination. Trying out a new water spot involves more than finding it you need to know about the ramp, parking, restaurants and is the waterway swim-able. All theses things are important especially if you have a family in tow. Lest I forget bathrooms as many ladies and kids are not very outdoorsy.
When we want to know we rely on two things, Joe the wonder kid and Goggle. When we first started this site we would travel around and look at boating spots the ramps and such and report back but Google can give you a look at the area without leaving the house. We can now look at the ramps and parking, know if there's waterside eateries and see their dock ups and see parks and swimming areas via an overhead view.
That's where Joe the wonder kid comes in our eleven year old is a whiz at the computer and reads at a level higher than most entering community college. Joe has a sweet love of boating he can drive the boat and tell you the make model and engine size of a boat at 200 yards. Same with cars he's a motor head like his dad and enjoys a good Summit racing catalog too. Joe can change a flat tire, work some tools and mows the yard with pleasure. He's a reader and a thinker smart beyond his years. He has become our travel guide and booking agent when we're planning a trip he gets on it. He'll find all the ramps, take a virtual tour along the waterway, see how much time it is to travel it and check out the hotels and their surroundings.
Our recent trip to Sarasota for boat racing we decided not to bring our boat because of the time involved in reaching our destination. We made a good choice because at the beach fellow boaters anchored along the shore told us of a nightmare at the ramp arriving at 4:30 a.m.and it taking a far walk to park even getting in at that hour. The races didn't start till 11 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m.he told us how he'll have to leave before the race even ends to travel back and wait to get out because its Fourth of July weekend and that's just what a holiday weekend brings in that boating area. We figured this as Joe the wonder kid Googled up the area and unless we traveled by water for over and hour there we only two ramps in the area not good for, no joke, the 200+ boats we saw anchored up watching the race. It was very crowded and several fights broke out as boaters blocked others view (who arrived much earlier) or their boats drifted and bobbed close to rubbing other boats. I prefer more laid back floats on the water we made a good call.
We also made a good decision to stay just outside the beach line as the room was half the price and had we brought the boat the parking lot big enough to park the boat trailer. Many of the hotels along Sarasota Beach and the area had teeny tiny parking lots crammed full. Very few had dock parking for guests and if they did you paid for it.
As we come into Autumn when the humility drops and the afternoon thunderstorms wain away it's a perfect time to venture out and take on new destinations exploring all the beautiful waterways of our great state. Make new traditions this holiday season maybe a fun in the sun boating Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years vacation. We don't have snow but we've got plenty of sun and water, no sleighing but you can go dashing through the waves.
Don't just own a boat your next adventure in boating to an undiscovered destination is waiting for you. You might not be lucky enough to have Joe but you can Google it up in advance. Happy boating!
