I have been in boat racing my entire life, it is what I love, it is what I do. I have met so many outstanding people, made a lot of life long friends and racing family members. When you grow up around a sport and at a young age and see someone like Julian Pettengill, to you he is bigger than Richard Petty or Muhammad Ali. I have had the opportunity to call him a close friend and hang out, do things with and really get to know him and his family. Not many people get this chance with a childhood hero.
I am really going to miss all the talks we had that started with Now listen . and if you knew any better you would. He would always look at things in a way that would make them better or faster he was always thinking. I always admired the friendship he and Bubby had, he always gave Bubby credit for all of his skills, the two together were an amazing team. When I was a kid and got to go with my father and brother to pick up a new boat at his shop and watched him walk around pointing out defects that had to be touched up or polished before his customer arrived, spoke volumes as to why so many of his boats are either still being raced today or being shown. The most amazing part of the trip was the company crown jewel Coldfire sitting in the shop waiting to go back out to another race in show condition.
I am going to miss Julian very much and with thanks to my wife, she put together the man back in his day at the nationals at Castaic driving what used to be Coldfire but was now Miss Down Town.
Our thoughts are with all of his family, especially Grace.
Grace will not be having a service and does not want any flowers. If you would like to send a card please let me know - Fred Hart
